Standards such as NERC CIP-005-2 and IEEE 1686-2007 define the functions required to implement a secure electronic perimeter to protect IEDs. However, most IEDs do not currently meet these requirements, and it will generally not be cost effective to implement comprehensive security in all field devices.
SMP Gateway creates a secure NERC CIP compliant perimeter to integrate both new and legacy IEDs. It simplifies the network architecture and provides utilities with a single point of access to their substation devices for data access and remote maintenance.

Cooper Power Systems SMP Gateway helps utilities meet NERC CIP requirements by providing a secure access point to substation devices.
The SMP Gateway's sophisticated software implements the following security features
Built-in firewall—all TCP/IP ports are blocked, excepting those required for control center communications and SMP Gateway status monitoring
Built-in VPN—all communications between the SMP Gateway and the SMP Gateway Tools, including the passthrough communications mode, use an encrypted VPN tunnel
Modem connection management—modem access can be enabled or disabled by the control center, all accesses are logged and limited to authorized users
Passthrough management—passthrough access can be enabled or disabled by the control center, all accesses are logged and limited to authorized users
Authentication—users can be authenticated locally, by the SMP Gateway, or by a corporate authentication server such as Microsoft Active Directory, for strong 2-factor authentication
Account management—strong passwords, individual user accounts, user groups, and detailed group permissions protect critical system functions from unauthorized access
Access management—all access attempts are logged, and accounts are locked out in the event of multiple failed attempts
Auditing—SMP Gateway logs can be retrieved remotely for auditing
