The Yukon Volt-var Control (VVC) application, formerly Yukon Centralized Capacitor Control application, minimizes system var flow to eliminate systems losses. The net result is improved energy efficiency and feeder voltage profiles.

The Volt-var Management application began as a centralized capacitor bank control management solution first deployed in 2001 for substation and feeder var management. In 2004, functionality was broadened to support substation and feeder voltage management. This Yukon Volt-var Management application is currently deployed at a number of utilities across North America controlling over 20,000 capacitor banks. Cooper Power Systems has collaborated with Volt-var Management customers enhancing the application functionality year over year to provide a feature rich field proven application with not just automation analysis and control, but also an easy to use user interface with maintenance, administration, and reporting functionality.

Features

Yukon’s Volt/var Control (VVC) application automates the process of managing power factor/vars on the utility’s entire distribution system. This is achieved by allowing the operator to assign control algorithms at all levels of your grid. Algorithms for voltage and var management may be implemented at a regional level encompassing tens or hundreds of substations with the same algorithm or on a specific basis using individual phase data on an individual substation feeder. Alternatively, the operator may employ a hybrid system with a mixture of numerous options depending on the data available from the field.

A browser-based client server allows for secure access to system functionality. Tabular and one-line based interfaces are available based on the user preference. This powerful interface allows the operator to update the algorithms parameters or simply change a bank’s state. Standard reports and verification schedules are also part of this package that allows the utility’s operations group to monitor and affect the power quality of their grid.

How It Works

The Yukon Volt-var Management application controls capacitor banks with several alternative control strategies. The Yukon Volt-var management application allows utilities to flexibly apply a strategy without requiring setting changes and site visits to every capacitor bank. The VVC software application interfaces to other utilities systems to receive real-time var (watts, voltage, etc.) measurements. These measurements will be used to determine if capacitor banks need to be operated to maintain optimal targets.
