The Liacouras Center at Temple University is a 10,200 seat multi-purpose arena and home to the NCAA Division I Temple Owls men’s and women’s basketball teams. The facility also hosts concerts, family events and theater shows. Global Spectrum manages the venue. The Liacouras Center was named one of the busiest arenas in the world by Venues Today, finishing 13th in the world and 10th in the United States for the Mid-Year 2012 rankings among venues with 10,000 seats and under.
The facility was experiencing low light levels and poor uniformity for the level of play that was being engaged in, and as recommended by the NCAA.
The project included replacement of the metal halide system over the arena floor in order to meet NCAA lighting requirements for HDTV broadcasting. Work lighting was upgraded as well. In total, 106 metal halide fixtures and 102 incandescent fixtures were replaced.
36 Ephesus Arena 600 fixtures and 18 Arena 190 fixtures were installed. 20 Prism color fixtures were installed for fan experience effects. The Ephesus solution included wired DMX controls on each fixture to interface with the venue’s existing control system. This provides instant, one-touch control to switch between different light settings as well as the ability to create unique fan experience effects incorporating the colored lighting fixtures.
Energy costs were reduced by an estimated 85% while the number of fixtures was reduced from 106 to 54. An average of 155fc was generated on the playing surface, dramatically exceeding NCAA Best Lighting Practices for National Championship Sites in basketball, as well as HDTV broadcasting standards. Max to min uniformity improved to an impressive 1.22. Fans in the Liacouras Center or viewing its events on HDTV will now have a brighter, sharper view of the game and a thrilling spectator experience.
