As a leading manufacturer of electrical products and tools and hardware, product responsibility is our primary concern. The ultimate purpose of our business is to offer products and services that help to manage electricity, supply power and provide tools and hardware for customers the world over. Cooper’s products enhance virtually every environment in society. Take a closer look at our
products and brands to see
how our customers rely on the safety, efficiency and reliability of our
products.
As a matter of policy and practice, we have long held that all Cooper products must be designed, produced and delivered with the safety of our customers as a primary consideration. We believe that safety must be inherent in everything we do as we design, test, manufacture and deliver Cooper products. To achieve this goal, we stress that each employee must understand and diligently carry out his or her responsibilities as they relate and contribute to the safe use of our products. And we believe that product responsibility goes beyond product safety. To that end, each Cooper operating division has a Product Safety Council, a cross-functional team that reviews and recommends a wide range of product and process improvements, including safety product support, industry education, safety labeling, product ergonomics, ease of installation and use, waste reduction, recycled and recyclable packaging, energy conservation and environmental conservation.
We are committed to designing products that are easy to use, environmentally friendly and energy-efficient. Examples include:
- Cooper Power Systems' Envirotemp® FR3® -fluid, a bio-based transformer fluid made from soybeans that helps achieve higher levels of public and workforce safety, environmental stewardship, performance and reliability, while keeping costs and liability down. Unlike petroleum-based transformer fluids, FR3 is fire resistant and biodegradable, so when a spill occurs, there are no environmental concerns or costly clean-ups. Another bonus for utilities: FR3 enhances the performance and slows the aging of transformers, so they are less likely to fail during peak demand periods.
- Cooper Power Systems' Yukon Advanced Energy Services software provides electric utilities a platform for remotely reading meters, controlling peak load, managing power, and monitoring substation and electrical distribution system assets. The automation solutions offer utilities the capabilities to optimize energy delivery, improve reliability and reduce costs.
- Cooper Crouse-Hinds' Airport Lighting operations introduced a new design of taxiway edge light used at airports that uses LED's rather than incandescent lamps. The new fixtures use 80% less electricity and the lamps last 20 times longer. Also, the lamps are a one-for-one replacement for the old style fixtures so airport operators do not have to change out an entire runway before they can begin to save energy by purchasing the new energy efficient fixture.
- Cooper Crouse-Hinds' Induction Lighting now offers up to 100,000 hours of lamp life, 20 times greater than the previous lamp life. This significantly reduces the need for re-lamping and the total installed operating costs for our customers.
- Cooper B Line's C-Port rooftop support product is used to support conduit and piping on flat rooftops. This product, which extends the life of the roof, replaces chemically treated lumber with an environmentally friendly "green" product made from recycled tires. The product was a category winner in the 2005 Plant Engineering Product of the Year Awards.
- Cooper Tools' R2 RapidRench™, an adjustable ratcheting socket wrench, replaces the need for 38 of the most popular socket sizes and eliminates the need for customers to rely on a socket set.
- In 2005, Cooper acquired Novitas, a technology company that manufactures commercial motion-ativated lighting controls designed for energy conservation.
- Cooper Lighting's InVue outdoor lighting products, introduced in 2003, answer the requirements of "dark skies" initiatives by protecting the night sky through focused lighting equipment. Cooper is a lifetime member of the International Dark-Sky Association which preserves and protects the night time environment.
- Cooper Menvier's Planete "ecologic" emergency lighting product line consumes only 10% of the energy required by traditional products, reduces light source environmental impact by 97% because it does not need to be replaced each year like standard fluorescent lights, and uses environmentally friendly components, recycled packaging and recyclable plastics.
Training
Cooper believes it is important for those who sell and buy our products to understand how and where they are to be used. Added to this is the need to understand the countless industry and government standards that relate to electrical products, as well as the growing diversity of our customer base and the technical sophistication of today’s electrical systems. This is why Cooper provided more than 100,000 hours of world-class training to users or buyers of our products last year, with classes designed to ensure the appropriate use of our products.
